Chemical Pulp
Making high-quality chemical pulp cost-effectively requires efficient integrated solutions in bleaching, deposit control, metals and water quality management. Atomes has the expertise required to help you optimize the whole process from start to finish. It is important to remember that pulping solutions have a significant beneficial effect on cost, quality and operability for paper machines in integrated mills.
While concentrating on the fiber quality, we can help you optimize your overall process operation and add value to your business. Our application know-how and bleaching concepts aim to produce high-quality pulp in a cost-effective and environmentally sound way.
It is all about fiber; the fiber line is only as strong as its weakest link and problems in pulp are multiplied in the final paper. That is why our understanding of the whole process - starting with the wood itself, through pulp and papermaking, to coating - is highly valued by our customers.
Solutions:
- Bleaching Additives
- Hydrochloric Acid
- Hydrogen Peroxide and Peracetic Acid
- Pulping Additives
- Sodium Chlorate
- Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda)

Packaging & Board
Atomes offers chemical solutions and expertise that help board makers to assure the right product properties and manage their process chemistry efficiently.
Strength, bulk and stiffness are crucial properties for packaging materials. Consumer packages also need the right surface properties to allow first-class printing and promotional features.
Atomes has dedicated technologies for all main packaging and board grades, including carbon-board and its sub-grades, containerboard, including liner and corrugated medium (fluting), and special board such as core and gypsum board. For more information, see menu on the left.
Packaging is a prerequisite for modern society and global trade. Total world production of fiber-based packaging and board is approx. 170 million tons per year, equaling 45-50% of the global paper and board production. The main growth is forecasted in Asia and Latin America.
Changes in logistics and consumer behavior, and environmental issues set new demands on packaging materials. Atomes is actively following up the development and we strive to update our know-how and develop new solutions.
Atomes' broad product portfolio, combined with excellent application knowhow and wide regional presence help our customers to choose the right chemicals for packaging and board making processes.
Solutions:
- Binders
- Colorants
- Defoamers
- Deinking Agents
- Deposit Control
- Retention
- Sizing
- Slime Control

Printing
When competing with electronic media, printing paper producers aim at excellent colour reproduction. The main paper properties affecting colour reproduction are ink adsorption, paper whiteness and shade, for which Atomes has developed several unique technologies.
The global production capacity of graphic papers is roughly 160 million tonnes per year: newsprint 40 million, office paper 40 million, publication paper 45 million and commercial printing paper 35 million. Global demand is roughly 150 million tonnes, and the demand is estimated to grow by 2-3 %, mainly in Eastern Europe, Latin America, India and China.
The consumption of paper per capita is still highest in North America (128 kg/capita), Japan (125 kg/capita) and Western Europe (105 kg/capita). Latin America, China and other Asia are at 8-12 kg/capita. Looking at consumption growth, Asia is already the dominant region for newsprint and the fastest growing region for both uncoated and coated printing and writing grades.

World production of newsprint totals roughly 39 million tonnes per year. North America and Western Europe still dominate newsprint production, accounting for 34% and 28% of global output respectively. The main consuming region, on the other hand, is Asia, with 32% of world consumption. Newsprint demand in North America has been declining since 2000 and with flat demand in Europe, Asia has been driving global demand over recent years and will continue to do so. The number of copies sold in the top 5 newsprint markets is lead by China with 100 million, followed by India with 79 million, Japan with 70 million, the USA with 53 million and Germany with 22 million copies per day.
Magazine Papers
World production of magazine paper totals roughly 45 million tonnes per year. Magazine paper includes uncoated mechanical grades (SC paper), coated mechanical grades (LWC, MWC) and to some degree low grammage coated woodfree grades (70-90 gsm). Structural overcapacity, mainly in Western Europe, has hit magazine paper profitability very hard over recent years. Due to capacity closures, the supply/demand balance for magazine paper has improved, helping to offset the rapid increase in wood and energy costs.
Global production of office paper grades has reached around 40 million tons per year. Office papers include mainly uncoated wood fine papers (UWF) and envelopes, dominantly at 80 g/m². A small fraction of office paper is coated for high quality inkjet purposes. Consumption and production are going down in mature markets like North America and Western Europe whereas Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America see healthy growth between 2,5–4,5%.
Commercial Papers
The use of commercial printing paper is driven by advertising needs – print performance, and the cost and value of printers and converters. Atomes offers a range of technologies to address these needs in a unique way.
Globally, Commercial Printing Papers has achieved a production volume of around 33 million tons per year. Although regional overcapacity has created high cost pressures on both paper producers and printers in traditional markets, demand within the advertising industry for high quality, high whiteness printed papers will continue in the future. Moreover, new features such as the personalization of advertising will create new challenges.
Recycled Fiber
Recovered paper is the most important raw material in the pulp and paper industry today. The primary recovered paper grades used to produce recycled fiber are:
- Mechanical printing and writing papers (ONP and OMG)
- Wood free (white) printing and writing paper (MOW, CBS, SBS)
- Brown grades (OCC and DLK)
- Mixed wastepaper grades
All the major paper grades are produced using recycled fibers including:
- Mechanical printing and writing grades
- Wood free printing and writing grades
- Packaging and board grades
- Tissue, towel, and specialty grades
We have solutions for recycling all types of recovered papers. We also have a broad range of chemical products to provide solutions that help our customers produce quality recycled fiber in an efficient, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner.
